On March 13, 1998, a crane was used to remove a pumpkin from atop the spire of McGraw Tower on the Cornell campus in Ithaca. The pumpkin had first appeard on the spire in the fall of 1997. Given the danger (or expense) involved in removing it, the pumpkin had been left to rot and fall off. However, the pumpkin rapidly dried out in the cold Ithaca air and remained ensconced for all to see until removed by crane on this day in 1998. (Source: Wikipedia, Cornell Chimes)
